CHEMICALS: THERAPEUTICS

A Note on Treatments

In treating diseases of aquatic organisms, a multiplicity of therapeutics are available.  Some of the products which follow carry brief descriptive use profiles which are intended to be general.  It is of fundamental importance that aquaculturalists try to assess what is the causative pathogen in a particular scenario or episode of infection.  This is best accomplished by pathologic examination of the specimens under consideration followed by culture of the pathogen (if possible) and testing against the therapeutic of choice.

Many organisms such as protozoans, parasites, fungi, etc. are readily identifiable by microscopic inspection.  In these cases, a therapeutic may be rapidly chosen.   In the case of many bacterial and viral infections, the aquaculturalist may not be so fortunate and intensive pathological investigation may be necessary.

The efficiency of a given therapeutic may be altered as a result of abnormal water chemistry, stocking densities, and practitioner error.  For these reasons, Argent Laboratories assumes no liability expressed or implied in the application of therapeutic agents sold.

AQUABAC-T is a dormant suspension of  7 species of live complimentary bacteria.  Aquabac-T augments the natural process of waste removal and improves water quality by providing a more diverse microbial population. Aquabac-T may be used in ponds, raceways, tanks or hatcheries. The bacteria are harmless to man and aquatic organisms.

Applications:  Ammonia levels between 1.0 and 3.0 ppm: 1/4 ppm Aquabac-T every week for 4 weeks.  (Use 1.0 ppm when ammonia is in excess of 3.0 ppm then follow with 1/4 ppm every 4 weeks.  Nitrite in the range 3 to 10 ppm can be controlled with 1/4 ppm treatment every 4 weeks.

ARGENTYNE (Iodine disinfectant for  Eggs-Buffered)

Egg disinfectant:  effective against a wide variety of bacteria including Aeromonas Salmonidida, the causative agent of Furunculosis.  Effective against a broad range of egg fungi and viruses including IHN, IPN and VHS.

Application:  To disinfectant eggs, dilute Argentyne 100 fold to give the diluted solution 100 ppm of free iodine.  Salmonid Eggs should be water hardened for two hours, measured into incubation trays and left for an additional two hours.  Dead or damaged eggs are removed.  The eggs are then placed in diluted Argentyne for 10 minutes, rinsed and returned to incubation troughs.  Fading of diluted Argentyne solutions indicates consumption of iodophore and the treatment solution should be discarded.  Argentyne is biologically compatible with the disinfection of all eggs from finfish, eels and crustaceans.

Disinfectant for disinfection of empty transport tanks, raceways, troughs and equipment in general.  Apply at about 200 ppm available chlorine.   Severe toxicity to aquatic species.  Neutralize with sodium thiosulfate before disposal if fish are present.  1 Liter of 200 ppm chlorine may be neutralized with 1.5 grams of sodium thiosulfate.
